Aaron Mathews, a native of Dallas, TX, joined the St. Charles Parish Staff as Director of Liturgical Music in August 2015. He comes from a musical family and has played piano at Mass since he was in the 8th grade.
He earned a Doctorate in Piano Pedagogy from the University of South Carolina, a Master's degree in Piano Pedagogy from Georgia State University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Piano Performance from Morehouse College. He has served on the music faculty at Allen University (Columbia, SC) and Viterbo University (La Crosse, WI) and has directed adult and youth choirs in both Catholic and protestant congregations.
One of Aaron's goals for the music program at St. Charles is to grow and expand the repertoire. He is excited to share songs that he has learned over the years while embracing the musical tradition that St. Charles already has. Further, he hopes to increase membership in all musical groups. Aaron is amazed by the abundance of talent at St. Charles and would like to encourage others to participate who have not done so already. He accepts new singers and instrumentalists year-round for the adult choirs, children's choirs, and hand bell choir. Please speak with him about how you can get involved, whether on a continual basis or for special occasions.
Aaron is a member of the Archdiocesan Liturgical Musicians' Association, the American Guild of Organists, the Music Teachers National Association, Inc., Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America, Inc., and the National Association of Negro Musicians, Inc.
Aaron loves to wear socks with interesting colors and patterns. It will be hard to find him in the same pair twice. In his free time, Aaron enjoys teaching piano, spending time with friends, watching shows and movies on Netflix, learning how to play the organ, traveling, and cooking.
